What Were the Primary Reasons for the â€Å"Fall† of Rome? By 200 BC, Rome was quickly becoming one of the world’s greatest empires with their excellent military conquering territory from modern day Scotland to Spain. After the Punic Wars and the defeat of Carthage, Rome had full control of the Mediterranean region, establishing colonies in North Africa, Egypt, the Middle East, and Asia Minor. Julius Caesar became Rome’s first emperor using his military influence. Under his reign, Rome shifted from a republic to an empire under the rule of an emperor and the military. Rome steadily increased in stability, power, and wealth, reaching Pax Romana (the time of Roman peace) under Emperor Augustus Caesar. Rome was forced to discover, as many other†¦show more content†¦These Germanic soldiers were not loyal to Rome and were therefore not as motivated to keep Rome afloat. Because of the undersized, lethargic Roman military and its aggressive opposition, Rome wa s very much open to foreign invasions. By the fifth century, the â€Å"powerhouse of the Mediterranean† was struggling to protect itself with its decreased population, apathetic military, and leaders with debauched morals. Outside of the Roman Empire, Germanic tribes took notice of the internal chaos and began invading the empire’s borders. Many of the tribes were cruel and combative, such as the Huns. The Huns â€Å"exceed any definition of savagery† and were â€Å"fired with an overwhelming desire for seizing the property of others, these swift-moving and ungovernable people make their destructive way amid the pillage and slaughter of those who live around them.† (Document D, excerpts about an Asian tribe called the Huns from Roman History by Ammianus Marcellinus). Roman soldiers would have had a challenge ahead of them if they had to deal with the Huns at the height of the Roman military, let alone having to fight them when their numbers were depleted and motivation running low. The Huns played a large part in minimizing what little hope Rome had of reviving itself into the Mediterranean-dominating empire it once was. Middle East Essay Example For Students

Middle East Essay The Middle East has always been in conflict, from biblical times, to the crusades, and on through modern times. Since around 1900, the conflict has primarily been between two groups, Jews and Arabs. During this time, the British occupied the land and under their control the conflict remained minimal. But within months of their departure, and the division of the land between Israel and the surrounding Arab nations, war broke out. The Arabs were unhappy with the UNs divisions of the land, and in an attempt to obtain the land, which they believed was rightfully theirs; they attacked the State of Israel. To the surprise of many, the armies of Egypt, Syria and Jordan fell to Israeli troops and instead of gaining land, they lost it. Almost twenty years later war broke out once more. This time Egypt had blocked off the Straits of Tiran, which supplied most of Israels exports, and mobilized most of their fighting army on the border with Israel. Israel, instead of waiting for Egypt to attack first, Israel made the first move and attacked Egypt. Israel destroyed almost all of Egypts bombers while they were still on the ground. Syria and Jordan both responded to this attack with an aerial assault on a few Israeli bases and war was waged. The war only lasted six days, hence the name The Six-Day War, and during this time Israel more than doubled its territory. They secured the Golan Heights to the north, the hills of Judea and Summaria to the east, and the Gaza Strip and the Sinai desert to the south. Besides the Sinai Desert, which was returned to Egypt as part of a peace agreement, most of these lands are part of Israel today. The Yom Kippur War was latter fought between the same countries but in this war no territory was gained or lost. Palestinians, as they are now called, were the people that were left in the territories that were capture by Israel in the Six-Day War. Palestinians were unwanted by the countries of their origin, even specifically told to stay in Israeli refugee camps, and were forced to stay in Israel. The Palestinians now claim that the land is theirs and that Israel stole it from them. In response to the Israeli theft of their land, Palestinian terrorist groups have sent suicide bombers into prominent city squares, heavily populated markets, and on to multiple buses; all in the attempt of regaining the land that they believe is theirs. Even though these bombings occur virtually weekly, the rest of the world pushes Israel towards peace. Thousands of Israeli men, woman, and children have been killed, most of them civilians, and the US persuades Israel to make concessions, that they should surrender to the terrorists demands. Besides the fact that peace would be allowing terrorism to prevail, peace is an impossible proposition, because the man that Israel is negotiating peace with isnt part of the terrorist groups. Another Reason why peace is not a reasonable option for Israel, is they rightfully own the land and they have no reason to give it back. For these reasons, peace with the Palestinians isnt possible and isnt beneficial to Israel.2The United States demand for Middle East peace in hypocritical. Since the September 11th incident, they have been saying that they must strike in response and find Osama Ben Laden so they can show the world that terrorism wont be tolerated. Yet Israel is expected to tolerate terrorism. Since the attack the United States created a list of terrorist groups yet Islamic Jihad, Hamas, and Hezbola werent put on the list, they arent considered terrorist groups by the US. Groups that kill place bombs in populated areas and kill innocent civilians arent considered terrorists. Israel retaliates to these bombings in the same way as the US does yet Israel is shown admonished for these actions. The Palestinians wouldnt give up anything; Israel would be the one making the sacrifices. Israel won the war in 1967, they own the land, and have military superiority over the Palestinians who lack any semblance of army and Israel would be the only one making concessions.Israel owns the land in question; the Palestinians never owned that land but this land is treated as if it doesnt belong to Israel. On most American maps of the Middle East, the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and the Golan Heights are marked as disputed Territory. Especially since the land never belonged to the Palestinians there is no reason for them to lay claim to it. Palestinians as a nation never existed until they were amassed in refugee camps. Before 1900 no one lived in Israel. Only once Jews moved in and started trying to buy the land did it become populated. Jordanians, Syrians, Egyptians, and Jews lived in Palestine before the State of Israel was created but not Palestinians. Yet even though they never owned the land they still claim it to be theirs.5These are reasons why the peace process shouldnt happen but even if it did happen it could never work. The Peace Process is an attempt to prevent terrorist activity, to stop innocent people from dying. Israel is trying to stop the terrorism, yet they talk to Yasser Arafat to make peace. They are trying to make a deal with a person who doesnt represent the terrorist groups, and cant control the terrorist groups. Yasser Arafat, the head of the PA is not affiliated with any terrorists; he is the leader of the Palestinian people. If Arafat doesnt control the terrorist groups he cant stop the violence, he isnt the person to create peace. If Arafat cant cause peace making a deal with him wont help anything. 6Ideally, people want the whole world to live in peace, unfortunately that isnt possible. True peace cant be found in the Middle East. The US doesnt see this; they keep talking of fixing the problem yet there only answer is a peace agreement. There is no reason, no gain, and no guarantee in peace with the Palestinians. It is not as if there is nothing to lose in it for Israel, they lose their land that their soldiers fought for and died for. Because an agreement cant be reached without Israel losing something that is has precious little of, an agreement cant just be tried or given a chance. Especially since Israel has the upper hand in this situation; which ends up being tied behinds its back, a little bit because of fear of war and a little bit out of lack of American support; it shouldnt be the one who is required to give up something for nothing. Beowulf Poem Essay Every country has an ideal hero who is revered and respected. In Great Britain, this individual happens to be a character from an epic poem called Beowulf. He was a warrior, and later a king, who engaged in numerous battles against monster opponents. In the English tradition, a perfect hero displays courage, generosity, and loyalty. Similarly, throughout the course of the epic poem, Beowulf presents himself as the ideal English hero, as someone who has bridged the gap between foolhardiness and true courage and has become an embodiment of the ideal union of wisdom and action (Renoir 1). He does not make cursory decisions, and has carefully planned out strategies, to carry out his attacks against his foes. Ultimately, Beowulfs main strength is his physical stature, but his discerning actions complement him as he ends up victorious in his battles against Grendel, Grendel Dam, and the dragon. A large portion of the poem is centered on a monster named Grendel, who terrorizes the great Danish mead hall of Herot. After Grendel had feasted on the Danes for twelve long years, the warriors give up and even the kings council made heathen vows, hoping for Hells Support and the Devils guidance in driving Their affliction off (l 91-93, 27). When Beowulf hears about the disturbance, he shows that he is intrepid by asking for permission to fight for the Danes. He does not make a perfunctory choice; instead, he patiently waits and to the voice of wisdom (Renoir 1). The sagacious elders tell Beowulf that the omens good, And they the adventure on (l 118-119, 27). Furthermore, he exhibits his wisdom by his technique of defeating Grendel. When Grendel comes to eat the men of the mead hall, Beowulf pretends to be asleep because he knows that Grendel only attacks during the nighttime. As they engage in battle, Beowulf displays his physical strength. Even Grendel, a ferocious monster, realizes that nowhere on earth Had he met a man whose hands were harder (l 326-327, 33). The greatest attribute of Beowulf is shown when he tears off the arm of Grendel as he does not need to use any weapons at all to defeat hells captive (l 363, 34). Only Beowulf could have accomplished this feat, who of all the men on earth Was the strongest (l 364-365, 34). To reiterate, while all the other Danes could not defeat Grendel for twelve long years, Beowulf easily mutilated Grendel in one short night. Even though Beowulfs accomplishment is remarkable, his glory is short lived. Grendels mother, in retaliation for her sons fatal wound, kills the closest friend of the Danes king. With little time to prepare, Beowulf accepts the challenge, and heads to face Grendel Dam in an unknown territory underwater. When Beowulf fights Grendel Dam, he is saved by his circumspect preparation of wearing chain mail to protect him. Grendel Dam Tried to work her fingers through the tight Ring-woven mail on his breast, but tore And scratched in vain as Beowulf clung onto his life (l 477-479, 41). He luckily discovers a sword that has been hammered by giants, but it is so massive that no ordinary man could lift Its carved and decorated length (l 533-534, 42). Thus, the epic shows just how strong Beowulf is. It is quite evident to the reader that he is no ordinary man, but has the power of numerous men as shown by the lifting of the giant-made sword. Moreover, the whole time he is fighting with Grendel Dam, he is underwater. This feat clearly shows how strongly built Beowulf is, not only in muscles and strength, but in his capability to hold his breath for such a long period of time as well.
